The Contest Cometh!

Hoerah! Here we are, with just over a week separating us from the glorious fabulousness that is the Eurovision Song Contest! For those of us who have been studying the entries, and the many national finals which accompany the contest for the past 6 months, that last saturday in may cannot come fast enough! I realise though, that many of you have not been paying as close attention to the past six months of amazingness as I have. So, I have found a few of my favourites that didnt quite make the final this year (that is they were beaten by another song). How fab!

But before we get onto those songs, I’m sure you are all wondering where Baku is? Well, its in Azerbaijan! And where is that you are wondering? Well, no one really knows for sure, but here is a short video that the European Broadcasting Union’s Lynda Woodruff has put out to educate us all on such matters!

Now, onto the songs which didnt quite make it! First up is the Schlager Diva Icon herself, winner of Eurovision in 1999, Swedish winner in 2008 and all round amazing performer Charlotte Perrelli. Unfortunately, her song “The Girl” didnt even make it out of the heats of the Swedish Selection Show “Melodifestivalen” – BUT IT IS AMAZING!

Next up we head south to Austria where Conchita Wurst (a man, dressed as a woman with a beard) came within 1% of the vote of being the Austrian singer at this year’s contest. Here is her absolutely fabulous entry, “That’s What I Am”:

Next we are heading back up and a bit to the left to visit Denmark, who unfortunately chose the incorrect person this year, alas. They could’ve sent a scandinavian princess in a white leotard with hanging streamers from her arms… Here is Ditte Marie with “Overflow”:

We will finish our journey in the lovely Netherlands with a song bursting with sexuality and even more leotard (and added hair matching boots!)! Raffaela didn’t make the final with her song “Chocolatte”, but it has made it to this list, and that must count for something!

Next time we will be having a look at the songs which have automatically made the final this year! A few potential winners in that bunch!

Remember,if you are in Brisbane on the 27th of May come along to Schlagerfest Brisbane’s first official Eurovision party! All proceeds raised will go directly to Healthy Communities!

Until next time! Happy Schlagering!!!

Vielen Dank Austria!

Yes!

Austria has produced the goods this year, and their national final to be held on February the 24th is set to be amazing, thanks to Austrian radio station, O(with an umlaut)3 releasing 8 of the ten tracks aiming to represent Austria in Baku later this year. All the songs are available to be listened to here.

Having listened to the eight, (with the remaining two not ready to be released yet) we can safely say that we like about four (as in listen to them again) and we LOVE two (as in couch/kitchen/shower danzen lasha tumbai!!!)

Regulars will remember our post on what could have been last year and especially our love of Oida Taunz well the Trackshittaz are back! And whilst we haven’t seen the finished product (please include lederhosen and tractors!!!) we are loving “Woki Mit Deim Popo” (not sure what this means, but i have contacts and hopefully soon we will know!). Here it is!!!

Next is the favourite to win and why the bloody hell not, an amazing song, sung by a Drag Queen with a beard who goes by the name of Conchita Wurst. The song itself is a mix of last years Austrian entry Nadine Beiler’s ‘The Secret is Love’ and Hungary’s 2011 participant Kati Wolf and her song ‘What About My Life’. With a few big light bursts, a wind machine, some sequins and the ubiquitous power diva strut this could be a real hit in Baku. The only question remaining is whether or not Europe is put off by her beard? Here is Conchita’s song, ‘That’s What I Am’. Amazing.

Gosh I’m Excited!
